WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - In a physical contest, the Saint Leo University women’s basketball muscled their way to victory over Palm Beach Atlantic University on Friday night as the Fish kept things close till late before watching the Lions pull away for the 60-46 victory.
After SLU seemed destined to go home a big winner in the early minutes, starting the game with a 6-0 run and building their eventual lead to double-digits, the Sailfish stormed back into contention with a late first-half rally that left them trailing only 27-30 at intermission.
Perhaps energized by their positive play in the first half, the Fish once again gave the Lions a run for their money with the solid inside play of sophomores Brooke Burgess (Palm City, Fla.) and Haley Adcock (Monroe, Ga.) who gave the Lion’s fits on the glass by combining for 15 offensive rebounds and many put-back points.
In the end, the Lions (4-2) were to much for the Sailfish and go home to Saint Leo with their first win in nearly three weeks.
Burgess tallied her sixth consecutive double-double on Friday night by accumulating 18 points on 9-of-20 shooting while pulling down 16 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end. Adcock registered a near double-double as well as she finished the night with nine points and 11 rebounds while also adding in three blocks.
The obvious downfall for the Fish in their loss against Saint Leo was their poor shooting effort which witnessed the team connecting on 20-of-74 shots from the field (29%) while hitting only 1-of-21 from beyond the arc.
Leading the way for the Lions were 15 points by West Palm Beach native Amanda Holloway who connected on 7-of-11 shots while adding in five rebounds and four assists. Melissa Guerero and Roni Carithers also netted double-digits for the Lions with 14 and 13 points respectively. Guerero proved to be a menace on defense as well with five steals in the victory.
PBA will be taking the rest of the weekend off from game action before returning to the Rubin Arena floor for a contest on Monday night versus Valdosta State University with tip-off scheduled for 7 pm.
