PENSACOLA, Fla.- The collegiate baseball season is nearly upon us. The Sailfish baseball team kicks off their season this weekend with a trip to Valdosta, Georgia for the Comfort Suites Classic where they will play three teams in three days. Going on the trip will be a roster of approximately 30 players including two players in senior utility player Matt Perkowski and starting pitcher Nic Kovacs who were named on Wednesday to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Pre-Season South Region teams.
The NCBWA Pre-Season All-Region teams are voted on by the Sports Information Director’s at each institution. A pre-season South Region Rankings were also released on Wednesday. See below.
Expected to both carry leadership roles of a solid group of fresh faces, Perkowski and Kovacs both enter their second seasons donning the PBA colors after junior college careers beforehand.
A native of North Fort Myers, Florida and a Polk State College transfer, Perkowski played mostly third-base last season as he led the team in total bases (90), runs scored (44), runs batted in (30), homeruns (7), triples (7) and slugging percentage (.588).
Perkowksi was selected to the South Region first-team as a Utility player with the left-handed swingy sluggler blessed with the ability to play both the infield and the outfield.
Kovacs returns as one of PBA’s top pitchers as he tied for the team-lead with five wins against only four losses while posting 74.1 innings pitched and a team-best 58 strikeouts a season ago. He also posted three complete games, two shutouts and one save in 17 total appearances for a 3.75 earned-run average.
The former Lake Sumter Community College standout and Clermont, Florida native is expected to lead an experienced Sailfish pitching staff which boasts eight returning arms to the fold for head coach Kent Bottenfield.
The team opens their season on Friday, February 1 at 6 pm when they take on Valdosta State followed by a Saturday matchup with the University of North Georgia and a Sunday showdown with Lynn University.
PBA opens their home slate on Tuesday, February 5 at 6 pm versus Florida Memorial University at Palm Beach Gardens High School. They will battle Lynn for the second time early on in the season by battling the Fighting Knights at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter on Friday, February 8 at 7 pm.
