DAVIE, Fla.- Facing yet another tough opponent in the NSU/Barry tournament, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team couldn’t put together a scoring rally against the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Friday evening as the Lady Sailfish fell to 0-2 to start the season by dropping their contest with the Lady Chargers by a final score of 7-0.
Ranked #14th in the national NCAA polls to start the 2008 campaign, UAH quickly jumped ahead of the Sailfish with two first inning runs off PBA starting pitcher Andrea Fugate. A senior right-hander from Lake Wales, Fla., Fugate took the defeat against the heavy-hitting Chargers by allowing 11 hits in 5+ innings while giving up seven runs (five earned) while registering four strikeouts and four walks for the game.
Sage Woodham (2-0) earned the victory in the pitcher’s circle for UAH while holding the Sailfish scoreless for six innings, giving up six hits before giving way to relief specialist Alex Lewis who came on in the seventh inning to close out the shutout with a pair of strikeouts in her only inning of work.
Danielle Perrotti (Orlando, Fla.) paced the Sailfish six-hit attack with two base knocks while also adding in a stolen base. Chelsea Gravini, Caitlin Bouschet, Heather Laird, and Same Russo all also contributed a hit each in the losing effort.
PBA continues their competitive weekend schedule at the Barry/NSU Tournament for the remainder of the weekend.
