OPA-LOCKA, Fla.- Hitting the road on Monday night, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team came through with their first win of the season against the likes of Florida Memorial University as the Fish cruised to a 71-59 victory.
Now 1-2 on the season, the Fish used a strong shooting performance in the first half to jump out to a commanding 40-22 lead before rounding out the second-half of play in similar fashion.
Leading the way was the strong inside presence of sophomore forward Brooke Burgess. The 6’0” sophomore transfer from Palm City, Florida tallied 22 points and an astonishing 19 rebounds in the victory as she paced three Sailfish scorers that reach double-figures.
The Fish connected on five-of-eleven first-half three-pointers with junior Sitara Richard (Richardson, Texas) and sophomore Ashley Adkins (Nacogdoches, Texas) doing most of the damage. Richard finished out the night with 18 points while just missing out on a “double-double” with nine rebounds.
PBA’s leading scorer from a year ago, Adkins tallied 16 points while adding in eight rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Sophomore Haley Adcock (Monroe, Ga.) proved to be valuable in the paint as she provided 11 rebounds while blocking three FMU shots in the game.
