Sailfish Drop Season Opener at FAU

BOCA RATON , FLA.- Hitting the road against a NCAA Division I opponent, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team opened up their 2007-2008 campaign with an 80-46 loss to the hands of Florida Atlantic University on Thursday evening.
With this the first test of the season for the Fish, the young squad came out firing as they kept things close throughout the first half. With just over 9:30 left in the first half, the home-standing Owls pushed ahead by a score of 19-18 and never looked back as they moved into the half with a 35-25 advantage.
In her first game on the bench as the head coach of the Sailfish, head coach Robin Potera-Haskins was a witness to some positive signs for her young program.
Leading the way offensively for the Fish was a 17 point performance by sophomore guard Kim Kelly ( Missouri City , Texas ) who connected on 5-14 shooting from the field while registering 7-12 from the charity stripe.
Ashley Adkins ( Nacogdoches , Texas ), PBA’s returning scorer from a year ago, paced the Sailfish with four assists while totaling seven points.
Overall, PBA finished the evening with a 32% shooting percentage (16-49) while hitting on only one of their eight shots from beyond the arc.
Newcomer Brooke Burgess, a sophomore transfer out of Palm City , Florida , collected eight rebounds in the post against the Owls on Thursday while also contributing seven points in her PBA debut.
PBA returns to action this Saturday as they welcome in Florida Tech for a 5:00 showdown at the Rubin Arena.
