WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- A late goal by Elizabeth Gonzalez put the icing on the cake for Saturday’s NCCAA South Region final as Palm Beach Atlantic battled in a hard-fought match with Emmanuel (Ga.) College at Magic Jack Field. Juliet Waller and Kasey Wyer each added goals in the win as the Fish clinched a spot in the NCCAA National Tournament to be played later this month with their 3-1 win.
A busy week of soccer on both the men’s and women’s side culminated on Saturday with another well-played match by head coach James Kryger and his PBA team at the pitch.
Although heavy rains the night before made the field conditions a bit soggy, both teams left all they had on the field for the right to move on to the NCCAA National Tournament to be played in Kissimmee, Florida in a few weeks.
Waller earned the first score of the day for PBA with a goal in the 10th minute as she tallied her 10th score of the season on a header delivered by freshman Kasey Wyer.
The 1-0 Sailfish lead held up until halftime as the Fish claimed a 12-1 advantage in shots in the opening half.
The Lions however would not be shutout as Liene Vaciete alertly picked off a pass in the midfield in the 56th minute and beat PBA goalkeeper Allison Fox for an equalizer.
Palm Beach Atlantic would have a response however as a fast-developing play in the 71st minute turned to gold as Gonzalez found Wyer open near the six-yard mark with Wyer easily placing a shot past the EC goalkeeper for the eventual game-winner.
The Lions would continue to push however, evidenced by their 8-5 advantage in shots in the second-half until Gonzalez put home some insurance with her goal in the 88th minute.
Laura Geisler tallied the assist to Gonzalez as PBA put home the 3-1 win in front of their home crowd.
Fox posted her 13th win of the season in goal as she made three saves.
The Sailfish finished with a 17-9 lead in shots while posting a remarkable 11-1 final tally in corner kicks.
PBA will find out their seeding for the NCCAA National Tournament next week with the Tournament set to take place from Nov. 28-Dec. 1 at Austin-Tindall Park in Kissimmee. Stay tuned to PBASailfish.com for future information on the NCCAA National Tournament.
