Shootout Win Sends Sailfish to NCCAA National Tournament

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Kenny Hogg converted the deciding penalty kick and goalkeeper Austin Spagnola made a key stop in the shootout as the Sailfish won the NCCAA South Region banner by advancing past Southern Wesleyan on PK’s, 3-1.

Officially, the match is a draw. Palm Beach Atlantic and Southern Wesleyan battled to a scoreless tie through 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods necessitating the shootout.

The Sailfish kicked first with Kevin Ireland, Lewis Thompson, and Cameron Roberts all converting. Freshman keeper Austin Spagnola responded with a stop on the first attempt

After SWU’s third attempt ricocheted off the crossbar, Hogg ended the drama with a clean strike to the back of the net.

Southern Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but PBA came out ready to play in the second half. AJ Black scored a heads-up goal in the 49th minute when a misplay by the SWU defender led to a chance for the goal.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until the 65th minute, when a beautiful play between Roberts and junior Evan Singlar led to the second Sailfish score. Singlar finished the NCCAA Regional with a goal in each match (3 total) as well as a pair of assists for a total of eight points.

Southern Wesleyan got the equalizer on a header from a set piece near midfield with just over one minute left in the match.

The Sailfish were outshot as a team 16-11, including an 8-4 margin in shots on goal. Southern Wesleyan also took more corners, 4-3, and committed more fouls, 15-7, but Spagnola was a huge difference in goal. The freshman stopped six total shots and had the key stop on SWU’s first shootout attempt.

Palm Beach Atlantic advances to the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida on November 28th through December 1st.
