WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Evan Singlar sent a gorgeous cross in to a waiting AJ Black for the golden goal in the 105th minute, sending Palm Beach Atlantic to victory over Saint Leo University in overtime on Saturday at Magic Jack Field.
It took two overtimes for the Sailfish and Lions to finally give the home crowd a winner, and even though the score indicated a close game, PBA dominated play throughout. Palm Beach Atlantic outshot Saint Leo 19-7, took 7 corner kicks to SLU's 3, and controlled possession for much of the match.
The defensive effort was outstanding on both sides of the ball. The Sailfish were stoned 11 times by the Saint Leo keeper, and Jonathan Strunk registered his third shutout on the season. Strunk only had two shots to stop in the game thanks to the solid play on the back line from Lewis Thompson, Chris Karafilov, and Branden Langenberg.
The victory was key for the Sailfish because entering the week they were tied with Saint Leo for the No. 4 position in the NSCAA's South Region. After each team lost during the week, both were desperate for a win on Saturday. Palm Beach Atlantic now improves their record to 8-1 on the season.
Palm Beach Atlantic won’t see action again until October 7th against West Alabama. The Sailfish will travel with the women’s team to Gainesville, Florida to take on the Tigers as part of a double header at a neutral site.
