Melbourne, Fla.- After nearly a month of preseason under their belt, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s cross country team got their season started in the right direction after competing at the Wickham Jamboree on Saturday.
Competing as individuals, head coach Chi Ly and the PBA squad sent four runners to the starting line in what would be a large number of runners overall in both the men and women’s categories.
Taking home some hardware in the large-scale event was PBA standout Hannah Berg (Oviedo, Fla.) who finished first in the 17 years old plus division with a personal record time of 19 minutes and 44 seconds in the 5K event. The only senior on the 2007 PBA squad, Berg set the pace early and often for her teammates and competitors.
Berg wasn’t the only PBA runner setting personal records as all three of the other Sailfish competitors secured personal record times as well. Tina Brown (Jacksonville, Fla.) who is a dual-sport athlete at Palm Beach Atlantic in cross country and tennis, competed in her first career race and came in with a solid time of 24 minutes and 10 seconds. Following right behind was freshman Kelly Shwartz (Richland, Mich.) who finished in 24 minutes and 52 seconds. Gloria Flores (Los Angeles, Calif.) rounded out the PBA runners with a personal record time of 26 minutes and 42 seconds.
With race number one now complete, Ly had time to reflect on his young team’s accomplishments.
“It was a good effort all around, especially for our first race of the season,” said Ly. “For such a big group of runners to compete against, and all the girls setting p.r’s says a lot. That is our goal throughout the season is to consistently set new personal records each time out with the hope of peeking at the NCCAA National Meet.”
With the next race only a week away, the PBA team won’t have a lot of time to prepare but their race location will be familiar as they travel back to Melbourne once again to compete in the Florida Tech Invitational beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 8th.
