JECKYL ISLAND, Ga.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s soccer team posted their third straight victory of the season on Sunday afternoon as they took on Georgia Gwinett College at the Jeckyl Island Sports Complex in a neutral site match. A goal in the first-half by sophomore Karoline Harnes got the team in front before a GGC equalizer in the second half. Senior Juliet Waller put home the game-winner in the 86th minute as PBA held on for a 2-1 win.
Now 5-1 on the season, the Fish will now turn their focus and attention to an important NCAA South Region match upcoming with Valdosta State University on Saturday, September 29th at Magic Jack Field. The two teams will kickoff at 4 pm.
Sunday’s match featured a new opponent for PBA as they took on Georgia Gwinett College from Lawrenceville, Georgia as the Grizzlies (4-4) begin their first season as a NAIA intercollegiate program.
Both teams would have their chances on a sunny afternoon for soccer as they would battle right down to the wire.
“We go off to a good start,” said head coach James Kryger. “Shots were flying early and after almost scoring an early goal, to their credit the GGC backline made it hard to penetrate.”
Karoline Harnes got the Fish going with a 40-yard strike in the 31st minute as teammate Moriah Zusi found Harnes open and ready to fire. A beautiful strike would ensue as Harnes scored for the second time in as many matches following a goal in Friday’s 7-0 win over Florida Memorial University.
The 1-0 lead would hold up through halftime while the early stages of the second half would leave the Fish clinging to their one goal lead.
The all-important equalizer would come with approximately 20 minutes remaining as Amairani Almanza and Amanda Dale came together for GGC on a breakaway to tie the score at 1-1.
With overtime looking like a strong possibility, it would be the Sailfish who would execute when needed as they put together a game-winning play.
Zusi pushed a pass out wide to Marianne Harnes to begin the play before Harnes delivered a long serve into the box that eventually found the foot of Waller who delivered the short kick in for a 2-1 lead.
The goal was the sixth of the season for Waller who also notched her third game-winning goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Allison Fox made seven saves in the victory as she continues her solid work in between the pipes for PBA.
Official statistics for the match will be posted as soon as they become available.
