Tigerville, S.C.- It took 80 minutes, but the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team finally broke through for a goal on Saturday and closed out the shutout of Southern Wesleyan University in the NCCAA South Regional Championship on the campus of North Greenville University.
Freshman Angie Kuhn (N. Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) broke the scoreless tie late in the contest on an assist from Jessica Rodriguez (West Palm Beach, Fla./Palm Beach Central HS) while PBA goalkeeper Ashley Morrell (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista HS) closed out the shutout for the Fish on their way to their third consecutive South Region championship and fourth in five seasons.
“We possessed the pall for a majority of the game and although we wasted some scoring chances early, Angie was able to put one through on a great free kick from Jessica (Rodriguez),” said head coach Dwayne Whiteheart after the contest.
In his fifth season at the helm of the Sailfish program, Whiteheart has led PBA to four NCCAA South Region championships in his five seasons.
Setting up the late goal for PBA came when Rodriguez soared a free kick in the direction of Kuhn who used her patented style of heading the ball past the SWU keeper for the score. That would be all that Morrell would need as she registered the shutout in goal for the Fish.
PBA opens up their quest for the 2007 NCCAA National Championship when they play on Friday, November 16th. Game times, opponents, and seedlings will be announced early next week.
After the championship game, the NCCAA South All-Region team was announced which contained six members of the Sailfish squad.
Pressured all season long, Ashley Morrell was named to the All-Region team as a goalkeeper as she would be joined on the defensive end by senior defender Erin Shelton (Atlantic Beach, Fla./Duncan U. Fletcher HS) and freshman standout Alex Regin (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale HS) who combined to give head coach Dwayne Whiteheart a formidable backfield defensive duo.
Another exciting duo to watch this season was the strong play of junior Brandi Bianco (Palm Harbor, Fla./Tarpon Springs HS) and freshman Angie Kuhn. Bianco broke out for three goals against Emmanuel College in the NCCAA South regional semi-finals while Kuhn registered the game-winning goal against Southern Wesleyan to clinch the title.
Tallying three assists in the two games of the South Regional, junior Jessica Rodriguez showed why she deserved regional recognition as she also was named to the All-Region squad.
