Tigerville, S.C.- Hitting the road to the campus of North Greenville University, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team opened up the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) South Regional with a resounding 5-1 victory over the likes of Emmanuel College.
Junior forward Brandi Bianco (Palm Harbor, Fla.), one of the finest players ever to wear the Sailfish uniform, produced a season-high three goals in their victory over EC.
Other PBA players registering goals in the victory were Lindsey Bates and freshman defender Alex Regin.
“We possessed the ball really well, and even though it took us awhile to get a goal, we really were playing solid,” said head coach Dwayne Whiteheart.
The Sailfish stumbled somewhat out of the gate as Emmanuel jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first ten minutes of the contest. EC midfielder Haley Boyce notched the goal when a cross sailed over PBA goalkeeper Ashley Morrell (Lake Worth, Fla./Part Vista HS) to break the scoreless tie.
The Fish would respond about ten minutes later as Bianco delivered her first score of the morning to knot up the score on an assist from Jessica Rodriguez (West Palm Beach, Fla./Tarpon Springs HS). With five minutes left in the half, PBA would take the lead for good on a score by Regin who collected a pass from fellow freshman Angie Kuhn (N. Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS).
Ending the half with a 2-1 advantage, Palm Beach Atlantic wouldn’t sit on their heels in the second half as they tallied three more goals.
The first score of the second half came by the way of another Bianco-Rodriguez connection as the duo once again teamed up for PBA’s third goal of the contest. Up next on the scoresheet was Bianco’s third and final goal of the contest which she retrived on an assist from sophomore Caitlin Ross (Neptune Beach, Fla./Fletcher HS).
Junior Katy Birkhead (Oklahoma City, Okla./West Moore HS) connected with sophomore Lindsey Bates (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland Christian School) for the fifth and final score as Bates delivered the shot and the score.
Now 6-9-1 on the season, PBA moves forward to play Southern Wesleyan University in the NCCAA South Regional championship game which will take place on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Stay tuned to the PBA athletics website for continuing coverage of the PBA soccer team and their postseason play.
