TAMPA, Fla.- After a top-five finish at last year’s NCAA South Regional that possibly opened some eyes to the elevation of the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s cross country program, the ladies were aiming to make another big statement on Friday as they competed in their first race of the 2012 season. They would do just that with a second-place team finish while senior Faith Warren earned a third-place finish with a 5,000 meter time of 19:29.
The host school of the University of Tampa posted the top team score with 32 points with PBA hauling in a second place team finish with 95 points. Savannah Art and Design as well as Flagler College and Valdosta State University rounded out the top-five just ahead of the University of South Florida.
Adding to Warren’s excellent finish which was behind only Valdosta State Universities Juliana Boehm (19:24) and Betsy Suda (19:26), an unattached runner, was more strong races by the remaining Sailfish team.
Senior Katherine Harvey tallied a top-20 finish as did senior Meghan Gilmore as Harvey crossed the finish line in 17th place with a time of 20:38 while Gilmore managed a 20:45 time slot which placed her 19th in the field.
Sophomore Kourtney Sumner was next for PBA at 21:51 (37th) while fellow sophomore Jessica Sexton came through at 22:04 (42nd).
Morgan Skiwra (23:55) and Sarah Walsh (25:08) rounded out PBA’s participants.
The Fish will now turn their attention to September 8th when they will travel to Coral Gables, Florida to take part in the Greentree Invitational.
