SKILLMAN, N.J.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s tennis team saw their name listed once again earlier this week as they were named to the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team. This is the seventh straight season, culminating with PBA’s time in the NCAA Division II ranks, that the Sailfish have earned the prestigious academic distinction.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2011 and spring 2012).
After seven PBA student-athletes were named to the ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition program under head coach Chi Ly a season ago, this season has seen five members of the Sailfish team recognized. Those student-athletes are: Victoria Baca, Maria Jimenez, Natalia Trotter, Veena Vasquez and Jessica Wharton.
This marks the third straight season for Trotter being honored by the ITA while Jimenez and Wharton earn their second consecutive honor.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
The 2012 season concluded as one of the best in team history as the Sailfish women’s tennis team claimed hold to their second-ever National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Championship while also seeing their ranking within the NCAA rise to a program-best mark.
In total, the Fish finished with a season record of 20-5.
