GREENVILLE, S.C.- The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) South Region announced their All-Region selections on Tuesday with three Palm Beach Atlantic players named to the mix. Senior shortstop Mari Stokes earned the recognition for an impressive fourth straight season while sophomore Camille Benito and junior Lisa Santos each were named for the first time.
Stokes wrapped up an outstanding all-around four-year career in 2012 by playing yet another new position while also maintaining her consistent success at the plate.
Settling in as the team’s starting shortstop after solid performances at second-base and centerfield earlier in her PBA career, Stokes shined even brighter in her final year as she made only three errors in nearly 200 defensive chances.
With the bat, Stokes was once again solid as the Port St. Lucie native posted a .345 batting average while playing in all 51 games. She belted seven doubles and one homerun amongst her 57 hits while scoring 30 runs and driving in another 19 runs. She became even more of a stolen base threat as well with 10 swipes in 11 tries.
Benito is being honored after a standout first-season as a regular starter as she took over first-base on a full-time basis. The Miami, Florida native hit .351 with team-high honors of six homeruns and 37 runs batted in. Her .560 slugging percentage and .444 on-base percentage were also best on the team.
Not only dangerous with the stick, Benito got the job done with her glove as well as she made only one error for a sparkling .996 fielding percentage.
Joining Stokes and Benito as an exceptional infielder was Santos who already earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region honors and now adds NCCAA All-Region to her list of accomplishments.
Playing in her first season with the team out of Rochester, New York, Santos started slow but quickly regained the form she has known in the past as she collected a team-high .366 batting average in 45 games.
She finished with 49 hits including eight doubles and two homers along with 31 RBI’s and 19 runs scored.
Palm Beach Atlantic finished 30-21 for the season.
