Murfreesboro, N.C.- Hitting the road for a two-game road swing along the East coast, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team got things started right by defeating Chowan University on Thursday afternoon by a score of 2-1 in overtime.
Despite collecting 27 shots compared to that of only 11 by the Hawks, the Sailfish would only be able to push across one goal in regulation before junior Brandi Bianco struck for the game-winning goal in the 98th minute to give PBA the victory.
A rain-soaked field kept both teams off their game early as both teams would be shutout until PBA freshman Angie Kuhn struck for the first goal of the evening via a penalty kick after being taken down inside the box. All scoring opportunities would fall short for both teams until late in regulation when Chowan forward Katie Perkins tied the game after rebounding a shot by Clara Danzeisen.
Forcing overtime with Perkins late goal, the Fish looked to leading scorer Brandi Bianco as the Sailfish looked to escape with a victory. Bianco came through as she collected the goal after Kuhn sent a through ball in her direction that Bianco promptly kicked in for the game-winning score.
“We played really well especially considering the wet conditions, but overall I was really pleased,” said head coach Dwayne Whiteheart.
“Their keeper really did a nice job of making some key saves as we did a solid job of creating scoring opportunities throughout the game,” continued Whiteheart.
The goalkeeper that Whiteheart spoke of was Tiffany Lee as she was credited with 15 saves in the losing effort.
Improving their overall record to 5-8-1, PBA now turns their attention to our nation’s capital as the Fish will be traveling to Washington D.C. to take on Trinity University. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
