MOBILE, Ala.- After four straight runner-up finishes at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament, the Sailfish would not be denied this time around. The Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis team claimed their second NCCAA National title on Friday afternoon as they defeated nemesis Dallas Baptist University by a score of 5-2 to become the first PBA program to earn multiple NCCAA team titles.
The Sailfish (20-5) finish out the season in impressive form as they breezed through pool play and the semi-finals of the NCCAA tournament without dropping a set while handing DBU a loss in the championship match.
Dallas Baptist had been the cause of PBA’s last three NCCAA runner-up finishes while semi-final opponent Indiana Wesleyan University had denied the Fish the top prize in 2008. This time around however it would be the Sailfish who will hoist the hardware as the 2012 team joins the 2004 squad as NCCAA National Champions.
This year’s championship is the sixth NCCAA team title in school history as they join women’s tennis (2004), women’s volleyball (2004), softball (2009), men’s soccer (2010) and men’s tennis (2010) as banner-holders in the Rubin Arena.
Official statistics of Friday’s championship match will be released as they become available as well as the post-tournament awards.
Congratulations to head coach Chi Ly, his coaching staff and the players for a job well done.
