ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- After a tough Friday night outing against Eckerd College ace Joey Cuda, the Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball team hoped to reverse their fortunes on Saturday as they battled the Tritons in both team’s final action of the season. The Tritons unfortunately would defend their home field with authority as they defeated the Sailfish 7-6 in game one and then finished off the sweep at 5-1 in game two.
The disappointing ending comes especially hard for the Sailfish (20-24) who had the opportunity to push their season record over the .500 winning percentage mark if they had been able to win the weekend series over the Tritons who close out their season with a 19-28 mark.
Nic Kovacs went to the mound for Palm Beach Atlantic in the opener on Saturday and despite some impressive numbers was unable to keep the Tritons off the scoreboard.
Reliever Andres Lopez allowed two runs to score in the eighth inning as the Tritons pushed across a pair to overcome the Fish 7-6.
The Sailfish jumped in front 2-0 in the top of the second inning as Matt Perkowski delivered a RBI triple while Nick Natale produced a run-scoring single.
Eckerd fought back however with two runs of their own in the second as the Fish were forced to start over again as would be the trend of the game.
The score would remain 2-2 until the top of the fifth inning as freshman Vaughn Bryan broke a 2-2 tie with a RBI single followed by Eckerd once again tying the score in their half of the inning.
The sixth inning saw the Fish bring two more in to score on a Perkowski 2-run homerun while EC tied the score at 5-5 on a 2-run homer of their own.
A Luis Mejia RBI groundout gave the Fish their final run of the game for a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning as the Fish hoped to hold on for the win.
After Kovacs held the Tritons scoreless in the seventh, EC would post their rally in the eighth and hold off the Fish in the ninth inning for the win.
Kovacs went seven innings and allowed 11 hits, five runs (three earned) with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Five Sailfish players registered two hits each in the game with Perkowksi driving in three runs to lead the way.
The second contest of the day was of the typical seven inning variety as the Tritons were looking for a sweep and a successful close out to their season.
PBA once again jumped out in front thanks to a RBI single from Brooks Fleming in the second inning that plated Natale.
Eckerd would fire back however with a pair of runs in the third thanks to a 2-run homer to move in front 2-1.
They added three more runs in the fifth to secure the 5-1 win.
The Fish started with junior Jonathan Kies on the mound followed by relief stints from Stefano Bucciol, Jeremiah Cothiere and Kenny Frosch.
Kies took the loss after three innings of work with two earned runs on three hits.
PBA managed only four hits in the loss.
The Sailfish conclude their season with a 20-24 record.
