JUPITER, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball team honored their eight seniors in a pregame ceremony on Tuesday evening before taking it to Florida Memorial University for a 10-1 Sailfish win at the Roger Dean Complex. The Fish fell behind early but then scored ten unanswered runs as they swept the season series from the Lions and improved their season record to 18-20.
The win for PBA backed up their last victory on Saturday over-then No. 1-ranked University of Tampa as the Fish make a push towards hopefully qualifying for the NCCAA Regional Tournament.
Senior Jeremiah Cothiere was one of the eight seniors honored during the pregame and was selected to start the contest on the mound as he was joined by fellow classmates: Matt Civetti, Kenny Frosch, Travis Murray, Luis Mejia, Nick Natale, Justin Sizemore and Logan Thomas in the PBA senior class.
Cothiere allowed a first inning run to the Lions (15-40) as J.C. Gil singled home a run to put the visitors from Miami Gardens up early.
Palm Beach Atlantic wouldn’t answer with a run of their own until the bottom of the third inning as they plated four runs to move in front 4-1.
A Matt Perkowski 2-run double brought the first two scores home followed later in the inning by a RBI single from Mejia and a run-scoring double from Murray.
Cothiere was lifted after four innings as he scattered six hits with the one run allowed while walking two and striking out six batters. Junior Jonathan Kies (3-2) entered and went the next three innings as he didn’t allowed a run with only three hits.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Fish added a two-spot in the fifth and sixth innings as Ethan Perla and Brooks Fleming drove in runs in the fifth while Sizemore and Mejia added in RBI’s in the sixth.
PBA capped their scoring in the eighth inning as Mejia contributed his third RBI hit of the night while Murray followed with a run-scoring double.
Following Kies out of the bullpen was Frosch who tossed a scoreless frame while Stefano Bucciol made his first appearance of the year a special one with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning.
PBA finished with 11 hits as a team with five players registering two hits each. Mejia finished with three runs driven in while Perkowski and Murray each added in a pair of RBI’s.
Ruddy Ruiz took the loss on the hill for FMU but did finish 3-for-3 with the bat.
The Sailfish will take on Barry University on Friday-Saturday, April 24-25 in Miami Shores for their next outing. The two teams will square off for a single game on Friday at 6 pm and two more on Saturday beginning at 12 pm. All three games will be broadcasted on the Sailfish Sports Network.
