Fort Lauderdale, Fla.- After rebounding with a win against Eckerd College last week and a tie with St. Thomas earlier this week, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team was unable to continue that momentum as they fell on the road on Saturday evening by a score of 2-0 to Nova Southeastern University.
Ranked #10 in the latest NCAA Division II national polls, NSU dominated the Sailfish from a statistical standpoint, collecting 26 total shots and eight corner kicks compared to that of three total shots for PBA and zero corner kicks.
Now 4-6-1 on the season, PBA was once again led by the strong play of sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Morrell (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista HS) who collected 14 saves despite allowing the two goals to the Sharks.
It didn’t take long for the Sharks to get on the board as they struck for their first score of the evening just short of the 7th minute. NSU midfielder Natalie Bellini fed Heather Swift for her second goal of the season to give the Sharks an early 1-0 advantage.
As the PBA defense buckled down, the Sharks and Sailfish would enter halftime with a 1-0 advantage for NSU.
Once again looking for a quick strike, NSU players Shurell Burton and Lauren Prow would hook up for goal number two in the 49th minute, giving Prow her eighth goal of the 2007 season. That would be all the Sharks would need as they road the 2-0 score to the end and pulled out a solid victory over the visiting Fish.
NSU goalkeeper Alyssa Quevedo earned the shutout for NSU who improved to 8-2 on the season.
The Sailfish have a week to prepare for their next opponent as they welcome in Florida Southern College for a PBA soccer double-header on Saturday, October 20th as the women’s teams play at 2:00 p.m. followed by a 6:00 p.m. date for the men’s squads.
