WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s tennis team began a busy stretch of action this weekend with three matches in as many days while prepping for an out-of-state trip next week. The Fish traveled to Satellite Beach on Friday where they battled St. Edwards University in a neutral site match before hosting Rollins College and Northwood University (Mich.) on Saturday and Sunday at Gaines Park.
The Fish opened play with an exciting 5-4 win over St. Edwards on Friday as Vilja Vahatalo earned a come-from-behind win at No. 5-singles to clinch the match as she posted a victory with scores of 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Other victories in the match came for PBA at No. 1 and No. 3-doubles while Veena Vasquez (6-2, 6-3), Leydi Zora (7-5, 6-4) and Vahatalo did the work necessary to win their matchups at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5-singles respectively.
Rain would unfortunately play a role in Saturday’s contest versus the No. 10-ranked Rollins Tars as the Sailfish welcomed in a highly-ranked regional foe.
Although the Fish would start strong with an 8-2 win at No. 1-doubles behind the good work of Vasquez and Zora, that would be the only victory the Fish would register as they dropped to 12-4 while the Tars improved to 9-7.
The rains that came upon Gaines Park did not allow Vasquez and Zora to close out their matchups at No. 1 and No. 3-singles respectively.
On Sunday it was the Fish back to the courts again as they squared off against an out-of-state competitor in Northwood University of Michigan.
The Fish would go on to claim the win on Sunday by a score of 7-2 as they improved to 13-4 on the season. Official results will be available soon.
Up next for Sailfish women’s tennis team, now ranked No. 27 in the nation is a long-weekend trip to Atlanta, Georgia where they will square off against Clark Atlanta University and Fort Valley State University.
