West Palm Beach, Fla.- Escaping a recent trend of close defeats, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team earned their first shutout of the season on Saturday evening as the Sailfish defeated the Eckerd College Tritons 2-0 at Lantana Field.
After winning their first three games of the season, the PBA women’s soccer team has more recently endured a stretch of close losses and multiple rainouts. Coming into their match with Eckerd, the Sailfish record stood at 3-6 on the season only to see them pick up their second victory of the year over Eckerd with sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Morrell picking up her first shutout of the season.
“Coming off our tough loss at Tampa, I was really proud of the way the girl’s played on both sides of the ball and our two goals tonight were really well played,” said head coach Dwayne Whiteheart.
“It’s very satisfying for the team to get that first shutout after a couple of close calls and even though we played a little sluggish, I thought we did things the right way,” continued Whiteheart.
Both Sailfish goals on the evening came within five minutes of each other as junior Laura Bowers (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland Christian HS) came off the right side in the 36th minute off an assist from fellow junior Brandi Bianco (Palm Harbor, Fla./Tarpon Springs HS) to tally the first goal. For the second straight match, Bowers has been utilized off the PBA bench and gave the Fish another dangerous scoring option.
Bianco would net the second goal of the evening in the 40th minute as she stood toe-to-toe at the top of the box, only to defeat the Tritons defensive effort and score the un-assisted goal to give the Fish a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
That lead would hold up as the Sailfish defense shut down the Tritons opportunities in the second half to take the match by the 2-0 score. PBA also defeated Eckerd back on September 7th in St. Petersburg by a score of 2-1.
PBA will look to continue their winning ways when they hit the road on Tuesday, October 9th for a matchup with St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens at 4:00 p.m.
