PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.- Welcoming in their first home opponent in three weeks the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team took on Eckerd College on Wednesday afternoon at the Lake Catherine Sportsplex. After an 8-0 win in five innings over the Tritons in game one, the Fish held off an EC rally in game two to post a 6-4 win and earn the series sweep over Eckerd.

Junior right-hander Mary Pippin posted her second straight shutout in game one while the Fish managed a total of nine hits and six runs in game two to back pitchers Chris Donovan and Lauren Bubeck.

Game One

Palm Beach Atlantic (20-13) scored at least one run in four of their five innings in game one with their biggest output coming in the third inning as they plated four runs to move comfortably in front.

Junior Kara Anderson walked and stole a base while moving up a base on a sacrifice bunt by junior Miranda Welch in the first inning. Anderson would come home to score one batter later on a RBI groundout by Lisa Santos.

Welch was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases-loaded in the second inning to plate a second run to set up the big third frame by PBA.

Mackenzie Johnson ripped a run-scoring double in the fourth inning to give PBA a 3-0 lead while Anderson chipped in a RBI single in the inning as well.

Leading 6-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, PBA finished things off with Erica Walters coming in to score on a EC error while freshman Ashley Roberts delivered a walk-off hit of sorts with a pinch-hit RBI single to give the Fish an 8-0 win.

Anderson finished 2-for-2 atop the PBA lineup with a walk and two runs scored while Mari Stokes was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Both Anderson and Stokes each stole two bases as well.

Pippin was efficient as she allowed only three hits and no runs while improving to 11-7 on the season.

Lisa Bierchen finished 2-for-3 for Eckerd from the leadoff spot.

Game Two

Donovan would go the first five innings of Wednesday’s second game as she allowed only one hit and one run with two walks and one strikeout.

PBA earned a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning as Anderson and Welch began things with back-to-back singles before a walk to Santos loaded the bases. Benito produced a sacrifice fly for one run while Welch came home later in the inning on a wild pitch.

The Sailfish added another run in the fourth on an infield RBI single by Roberts.

Eckerd scored their first run of the day in the fifth inning as a RBI single by Bynum cut the lead to 3-1.

PBA added in two runs on a double by Stokes in the bottom of the fifth to go back up more comfortably 5-1.

Lauren Powell added the final PBA run with a RBI single in the sixth inning.

The Tritons made things interesting with three runs in the top of the seventh but fell short at 6-4.

Welch finished 2-for-4 in game two while Stokes added in two more hits with two runs driven home.
