PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.- Two big innings put forth by Nova Southeastern University on Wednesday evening at Palm Beach Gardens High School left the Sailfish baseball team short of tallying a home win over the Sharks. A seven-run fourth inning by NSU erased a 5-2 deficit while six more runs in the top of the seventh put the game out of reach as the Sharks torched PBA pitching for a total of 16 hits in a 16-7 win.
Areo Regoli tallied his third multi-homer game of the season for Nova Southeastern who improved their record to 15-4 with the regional win over Palm Beach Atlantic who drops to 11-9 on the season.
Sailfish junior left-hander Jonathan Kies earned his second-straight mid-week starting assignment on the hill as he was unable to duplicate last week’s success against Caldwell College where he tossed 6.1 solid innings.
A two-run homer by NSU catcher Brett Clements in the top of the second inning put NSU on the board before PBA clawed their way back into the lead with five unanswered runs.
Senior catcher Travis Murray doubled to start the bottom of the second inning before back-to-back singles by Brooks Fleming and Nick Natale loaded the bases. A tapper back to the mound by Brian Walker ended with two runs coming in to score for PBA as NSU starting pitcher Robert Baroniel threw-away the attempted throw home allowing both Murray and Fleming to scamper home to score.
A groundout by freshman Vaughn Bryan would bring in the third run of the inning as PBA moved in front 3-2.
The Fish added on two more runs in the bottom of the third as seniors Justin Sizemore and Luis Mejia started the frame with consecutive singles before a Murray sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position.
Fleming would follow with a sac fly to score the first run while a Natale triple plated another run as PBA moved ahead 5-2 after three innings.
Kies ran into trouble in the fourth however as Ray Navarro drove home two runs with a RBI single while Carlos Asuaje managed a RBI single of his own. The big blow came on Regoli’s first homerun of the night as his long blast down the left-field line drove in three runs as he greeted PBA freshman reliever Robbie Pettet with the blast.
Regoli began the seventh inning with another solo shot while the inning also saw a 2-run double from Asuaje and a RBI single from Chris Morales.
PBA added two runs in the ninth inning as Taylor Kaprive singled home a run following a Jordan Carter triple while Christian Correa added in a sac fly.
NSU reliever Mauricio Rodriguez tossed three scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season while Kies drops to 2-1.
Sizemore posted two more hits in the loss for PBA while Natale finished 2-for-4. Carter went 2-for-2 after entering the ballgame as a pinch-hitter.
Palm Beach Atlantic will go to the road this weekend when they take on Florida Tech on Friday, March 23rd at 6 pm.
