ST. PETERSBRUG, Fla.- Sophomore first-baseman Camille Benito put together a career day on Monday as she blasted a homerun in each game of Palm Beach Atlantic’s double-header of Eckerd College. The Miami, Florida native slugged a grand-slam in the opener and then added another long-ball in game two as PBA claimed 11-1 and 8-0 victories over the Tritons, both in five innings.
Benito pushes her season average over the .400 mark while standing at the top of the team standings in homeruns and runs batted in. For the day, Benito finished 5-for-6 with a total of six runs driven in and four runs scored.
The Sailfish (17-10) wasted little time in getting on the board on Monday as they scored in each of the first three innings. Their biggest scoring outburst came in the second inning as the Fish plated six runs and moved in front 8-0. Three more runs in the third inning put a cap on what would be an offensive-explosion for the Sailfish.
Junior second-baseman Lisa Santos doubled home two runs in the first inning to get her team on the board while Benito’s bases-loaded round-tripper came in the second inning to add four more runs to PBA’s total. Kara Anderson also chipped in with a RBI single in the second inning.
Anderson added a two-run triple to her total in the third inning while Santos cashed in on another RBI with a run-scoring single to cap the PBA scoring.
Mary Pippin tossed the first two innings for Palm Beach Atlantic before handing the ball off to teammate Chris Donovan who logged the final three innings in earning the win.
The Fish banged out 12 hits in the game one victory with Anderson and Benito each registering three hits apiece.
Riding the momentum they started with their big game one performance, the Sailfish bats didn’t slow down in game two as they registered 12 more hits and scored eight runs to produce another eight-run victory.
After a scoreless first inning, the Fish got back into the scoring column with a run in the second inning thanks to a Lauren Powell RBI single. The Fish scored three more runs in the third inning as senior Mari Stokes delivered a one-out solo homer followed later in the inning by a 2-run shot by Benito that also scored Santos.
Two more runs came home to score in the fifth off a Powell 2-run double while Palm Beach Atlantic put the game out of reach with two runs in the top of the seventh on a Kimberly Traxler sacrifice fly and another run coming in on an Eckerd error.
Powell led the way offensively in game two with a 3-for-4 performance with three runs batted in while Anderson, Benito and Mackenzie Johnson each added in a pair of hits.
The big offensive support backed another solid outing by senior pitcher Lauren Bubeck who went the distance in claiming the shutout victory. Bubeck allowed only four hits and two walks while striking out three batters in the victory.
PBA will take on Flagler College on Wednesday, March 7th in St. Augustine, Florida before taking a few days off for the remainder of the Universities Spring Break. Game time for Wednesday at Flagler College is scheduled for 4 pm.
