CLEARWATER, Fla.- After a 1-0 win on Friday evening to open the Eckerd College Invitational, the Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team was hoping to come back with a pair of victories on Saturday evening against two more tough opponents. Although they would play well, their efforts wouldn’t be quite enough as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of West Florida and a 6-4 loss to No. 21-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University.
West Florida did all their damage in the bottom of the third inning as three runs came around to score thanks largely to a two-run homerun from Kasie Buckley.
Sophomore Mackenzie Johnson got the Fish on the board with a run-scoring double in the top of the second inning but the Fish offense would be held off the scoreboard the remainder of the game.
Senior Chris Donovan pitched effectively for five innings but took the loss as she allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out two and walking none. Lauren Bubeck tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Palm Beach Atlantic managed five hits in the loss against UWF’s Sarah Scott who went the distance for the victory while collecting four strikeouts.
Sophomore Lauren Powell finished with a pair of hits in the loss for PBA.
Game two saw the Sailfish get a late rally when Powell drilled a 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to move in front 4-3 only to see AASU fight back with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn the 6-4 win.
The Fish will wrap up play at the EC Invitational on Sunday, February 12th when they take on Eckerd and the University of Tampa. The Fish battle Tampa at 9 am and Eckerd at 11:30 am.
