WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Opening day for the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s tennis team proved to be a positive outcome as the Sailfish downed No. 18-ranked Florida Tech by a score of 6-3. The two NCAA South Region rivals squared off on Wednesday at Gaines Park with the Fish taking two of three doubles matches and after falling at the top two singles spots the Blue and White would knock off the Panthers in spots 3-6.

A roster of some veterans mixed with fresh new talent, the Sailfish (1-0) showed their bright future under head coach Chi Ly by seeing court time for two freshmen as well as a graduate student.

Freshman Veena Vasquez, of nearby Boynton Beach, Florida made her official PBA debut alongside grad student Leydi Zora at No. 1 doubles as they defeated Kristina Huba and Stephanie Dohner by an 8-4 score.

After dropping the second doubles matchup, the Sailfish tandem of sophomore Jessica Wharton and freshman Lexi Antista powered through for an 8-5 win and a 2-1 lead after doubles for PBA.

Back on top 3-2 after taking the top two singles won by Kristina Huba and Abby Greif, the Panthers appeared in control and perhaps on their way to victory.

The Sailfish would have other ideas however as Zora and Natalia Trotter took doubles No. 3 and 4 with Zora scoring a 6-2, 6-4 win and Trotter managing a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win.

Wharton came from behind to clinch the match with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles while Antista produced a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles to close out the match in style.

The Fish travel to Saint Leo University this weekend when they will battle the Lions on Saturday, February 4th beginning at 1 pm.
