TAMPA, Fla.- Four Palm Beach Atlantic players reached double-figures in points on Saturday afternoon at the Bob Martinez Center as the Sailfish tallied a 68-55 win over the University of Tampa. The win for PBA gives head coach Terry Primm his first career victory over the Spartans, the last team in which he had not yet defeated from the Sunshine State Conference.
With both programs hoping for a turn of fortunes down the stretch of their respective seasons, the Sailfish (4-14) were the ones headed in the right direction on Saturday as they went ahead early on the Spartans (4-13) and never looked back.
The Sailfish knocked the Spartans out from contention early on as they jumped out to a quick double-digit lead.
A layup from freshman Marcus Hardy with 13:33 to go in the first-half gave the Sailfish their first double-digit lead as they pushed in front 17-6.
A layup from Dante Valentine gave the Blue and White their biggest lead of the half as his bucket found the bottom of the net to move in front 38-13 with 4:13 remaining before halftime.
Stefon Barfield cut the halftime deficit to 20 points when he sank a 3-pointer just before the break as Palm Beach Atlantic led 40-20 going into intermission.
The Palm Beach Atlantic lead would grow to as many as 30 points in the second period as the Fish built on their first-half success and settled for a 13 point win as Tampa collected a late scoring spurt.
Hardy and fellow front-court mate Ian Sitz each tallied 15 points to lead the way for PBA with Hardy adding in five rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and one steal in 35 minutes of play.
Matthew Gierl added in a solid performance as well with 13 points and five assists as he buried 2-of-3 shots from beyond the arc and 4-of-7 overall.
Valentine proved solid at the point guard position with 12 points and six assists to go with five rebounds while senior Terrell Terry contributed nine points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench.
The Sailfish finished the afternoon shooting an even 40 percent (26-65) from the field.
Barfield managed a game-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting to lead the Spartans effort.
PBA will take on Florida Southern College as part of a PBA-FSC basketball double-header on Wednesday, January 25th in Lakeland, Florida. The men will tipoff at approximately 7:30 pm.
