VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University and Valdosta State University women’s basketball teams put a cap on the 2011 portion of the hoops season on Saturday afternoon with a matchup in Valdosta to conclude a season series between the two teams. As they were able to do back on December 3rd in West Palm Beach, the Lady Blazers would prove victorious over PBA as they came through with a 64-48 win.
Sailfish senior Jordan Kong led a determined PBA effort on Saturday in the Peach State with game-high honors of 19 points but it would be a balanced effort of VSU that saw them place five players in the scoring column with at least eight points.
Early on following a game opening basket by VSU it would be PBA who would control the score as they led 10-4 with 12:08 to play in the opening half on a pair of Lynsey Poole free-throws.
The Blazers (9-2) would be tough to shake however as they quickly reestablished a lead and would go into halftime holding on to a 30-26 lead.
Palm Beach Atlantic (5-10) would claim the better shooting half with a 47.1 percent (8-17) effort compared to only 40 percent (10-25) from the Blazers however a 9-5 disparity in turnovers in favor of VSU would aide their efforts.
After Valdosta would stretch their advantage to nearly double-digits in the opening minutes of the second-half the Sailfish would respond and cut the VSU lead back down to only one point on a Poole 3-pointer with 11:13 to play as it trimmed the score to 40-39.
The Blazers would have a response however as they rattled off a 17-2 run following Poole’s triple as they put a more comfortable distance between them and their West Palm Beach opponent.
The Sailfish would shoot 33.3 percent (8-24) in the second-half while VSU claimed a more respectable 45.8 percent (11-24) showing to claim the year-ending victory.
Kong finished 5-of-7 from beyond the arc for PBA as she led the way on a solid 3-point shooting effort by PBA who concluded the contest 7-of-15 from deep.
Senior Selethia Jackson added 13 points and three blocks for the Fish while Poole reached double-figures as well with 10 points to go with seven rebounds.
Ashley Dolberry although limited to just two points before fouling out did bring down a game-best 11 rebounds in 27 minutes.
Valdosta State was paced by Brittany Ferguson with 18 points.
The Fish will have a few days remaining in their holiday break but will be back in action on Wednesday, January 4th when they host Rollins College at 6 pm.
