BOCA RATON, Fla.- After a three game winning streak the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team has now reeled off a three game losing streak as they were defeated on Monday evening at Lynn University by the score of 54-46. A tough shooting night for the Lady Sailfish of 27.5 percent kept a low-scoring affair on the side of the Fighting Knights as they earned the victory at the de Hoernle Center.
After a balanced first-half that saw the Sailfish (4-5) trail the Knights (4-3) by just two points at 31-29, neither team could get back into much of an offensive rhythm in the second-half as just 12 made field-goals were registered between the two teams.
Palm Beach Atlantic shot 43.5 percent (10-23) in the opening half that saw them lead by as many as seven points when senior Jordan Kong dropped in a 3-pointer to push her team ahead 20-13 with 9:45 to play.
That Kong triple would be the last points put on the board for PBA for over a seven minute span as LU rattled off a 14-0 run as took a seven-point lead of their own on a free-throw from Charla Nelson-James with 4:04 remaining.
A jumper with 2:30 left in the half by Kong ended the scoring drought for PBA as they would eventually tie the score at 29-29 on a pair of Loren Wilkins free-throws just before halftime. A basket by LU’s Kira Harvey left the home team with a two point lead into the break.
With neither team finding much success shooting the basketball in the second-half, the score would remain close until the final minutes when Lynn would increase their lead to a game-high eight points near the end as PBA was forced to foul.
Typically strong within the interior, PBA was limited to just six points inside the paint against LU’s big front-line while the Knights managed 22 points in the paint for the contest.
Lynn also took advantage of 15 second chance points and 13 points off PBA turnovers to earn the victory.
The Fish were led by 14 points from Kong who knocked down 4-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc while playing all 40 minutes. Junior Ashley Dolberry added in a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. Loren Wilkins added nine points while Selethia Jackson chipped in nine points and eight boards.
PBA will take on another South Florida rival in Barry University at the Rubin Arena on Wednesday, December 7th at 5:30 pm as part of a Sailfish-Bucs basketball double-header.
