ICAA Names Bob White and Four PBA Players to Postseason Listing

Written By: Michael Brown, Assistant A.D. for Athletic Communications

TIFFIN, Ohio- The Independent Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) named their annual volleyball posteason listing recently as announced by director Mike Bond and voted on by the member institutions Sports Information Directors. Sailfish head coach Bob White was named the ICAA Coach of the Year while four Sailfish players were named to one of the three All-ICAA teams.

The ICAA is composed of NCAA Division II schools that are not in a conference.  Volleyball members are Black Hills State University, the University of Central Oklahoma, Central State University, Lindenwood University, Notre Dame College, Palm Beach Atlantic, Urbana University, Ursuline College and Washington Adventist University.

Coach White was named the ICAA Coach of the Year following another outstanding campaign at the helm of the Sailfish volleyball team. Currently preparing for the NCCAA National Tournament following a 27-3 record to date, the Fish have had a memorable season as they were ranked within the NCAA Regional rankings for the first time in program history while just missing out on a NCAA Regional Tournament bid.

The ICAA named Sailfish junior outside-hitter Mariela Quesada to the All-ICAA first-team following her spectacular second season in a PBA uniform. The San Jose, Costa Rica native leads the Sailfish with 383 kills on the season while averaging 4.56 kills per set. Quesada’s hitting marks rank in top-ten of the NCAA Division II statistical rankings this season.

Senior middle-blocker Lanae Robinson was named to the All-ICAA second-team following her solid final campaign wearing the Blue and White. The Cave Creek, Arizona product claimed 190 kills (1.98 kills per set) while ranking in the top-20 of the NCAA rankings in hitting percentage with a team-best .371. She would also register solid totals of 66 total blocks and 45 service aces, both good for second on the squad.

Laying claim to positions on the All-ICAA third-team were sophomore right-side hitter Christina Alessi and freshman setter Becca Acevedo.

Alessi stepped up her game this season by finishing second on the team in kills with an even 200 through 29 matches this season while managing 2.13 kills per set and a .327 hitting percentage. The West Palm Beach native and the Kings Academy product also added in 62 blocks in her important role on the front-line.

Acevedo will soon be closing out a memorable first season in a PBA uniform as the Miami, Florida native stepped into the starting setter’s role from day one of the season and never looked back. Acevedo was also named to the All-ICAA Freshman Team as she has registered 945 assists (9.64 per set) while leading the Fish in service aces with 63 on the season.

ICAA Player of the Year honors went to Central Oklahoma’s outside-hitter Alex Richardson who averaged 3.79 kills and 0.48 blocks per set over 124 sets played. UCO also saw setter Bella Romero earn ICAA Setter of the Year honors as she averaged 10.01 assists per set while adding in 2.21 digs and 0.28 service aces per set.

Libero of the Year went to Kalia Schrimpf of Lindenwood as she averaged 5.04 digs per set while totaling 781 digs for the season. Freshman of the Year was Kelsey Volkmer of Urbana who averaged 2.58 kills and 0.45 blocks per set while hitting .241 over 118 sets.
