CENTRAL, S.C.- Following another dominating showing at the NCCAA South Regional Tournament this past weekend on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University, the Sailfish men’s soccer team saw five players and head coach Jose Gomez named to the NCCAA All-Region listing. The Sailfish were dominant once again in claiming their sixth straight NCCAA Regional title as they posted a pair of shutouts to earn the crown.
The Sailfish improved their season record to 12-7 with a 6-0 shutout win over Chowan University and a 3-0 victory in the regional final against Emmanuel College.
Joining Coach Gomez in the listing were three first-year players for PBA and two players entering their second season wearing the Blue and White.
Sophomore forward Kenny Hogg, a native of Irvine, Scotland and in his first season with the Fish, claimed NCCAA South Region Player of the Year honors following what has been one of the most impressive individual seasons in program history. Hogg tallied 19 goals in 19 matches on the season with two assists for a total of 40 points.
Hogg registered five game-winning goals on the season while playing just over 1500 minutes on the season.
Joining Hogg on the NCCAA All-Region team were freshmen midfielders AJ Black and Kevin Ireland along with defenders Chris Karafilov and Lewis Thompson.
Black led all Sailfish players on the season with 12 assists while also registering one goal in his first season with the team following his prep career at Plant City High School. Ireland has been a solid addition as well for PBA in the midfield with four goals and four assists, both third on the squad.
Karafilov and Thompson both anchored the PBA defense for much of the season as both topped 1,000 minutes of time in the defensive backfield. Thompson chipped in with a goal and an assist on the season while Karafilov added in one goal as well.
The Sailfish men’s soccer team will now prepare for their trip to Kissimmee, Florida on Nov. 30th-Dec. 3rd to compete in the NCCAA National Tournament. The Fish will be looking to defend their title after winning the 2010 NCCAA National Championship.
