DELAND, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s basketball team opened the 2011-12 season on Friday night in a unique environment as the Sailfish took on the first of two NCAA Division I opponents they will face this season as they battled Stetson University at the Edmunds Center. Facing a 12-point deficit at halftime, the Sailfish outscored the Lady Hatters in the second-half while eventually falling 63-52 in both team’s official debut.

Junior Ashley Dolberry began her third campaign wearing a PBA uniform in style by leading all players with 17 points on the night while finishing with a double-double as she added in 11 rebounds in only 21 minutes of court time.

The Sailfish (0-1) would outshoot the Lady Hatters (1-0) in each half as they finished with a 35.2% shooting mark on the night as they connected on 19-of-54 total shots.

Palm Beach Atlantic would also win the rebounding battle with 44 total rebounds compared to that of only 39 boards by Stetson however the turnover ratio of 22-8 would eventually sink the Sailfish chances at knocking off their opponent. Stetson also managed to make 27 trips to the charity stripe while PBA was limited to just nine tries from the foul line.

The two teams battled back-and-forth through much of the first ten minutes before PBA took their biggest lead of the night on a Dolberry layup to move ahead 16-12 with 9:40 remaining in the half.

From this point the Hatters would get their offense moving in the right direction as a 15-4 run would ensue over the next several minutes and allow for SU to move in front by double-digits when Sasha Sims buried a three-pointer with just over two minutes remaining in the first-half that put her team up 32-20.

That’s where things would stand heading into halftime as the Fish hoped to regroup and adjust to the Stetson pressure.

As mentioned the Sailfish were able to outscore the Hatters in the second-half as they posted 32 second-half points compared the 31 points that their opposition would tally.

The early stages of the second-half would see Stetson increase their lead to as many as 24 points when PBA began to chip away at the big lead.

A 10-2 run by the Fish cut the SU advantage down to a more manageable deficit with PBA getting to as close as nine points however the clock would be in favor of the home-standing Hatters as PBA’s comeback effort would run short on time.

Following Dolberry’s solid performance of 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line, PBA also saw solid contributions from a number of other sources.

Selethia Jackson, who led the squad in rebounding a season ago, put together a 12 rebound night while adding in five points, four steals, and two blocks.

Senior Elizabeth Fugate put together a solid night as well in the paint with eight points and seven rebounds while Jordan Kong chipped in seven points off the bench.

Stetson was paced by three players in double-figures including 13 points each from Cherisse Burris and Shanasa Sanders while Sasha Sims registered 12 points. Victoria McGowan added nine rebounds, eight points, six assists, and three steals in 30 minutes.

PBA will be off until Wednesday, November 16th when they host the University of Tampa at 6 pm in the Rubin Arena.
