WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Unable to keep their winning streak going, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s basketball team stumbled in their 2008 debut on Wednesday afternoon as they fell to Saint Leo University by a final score of 79-48.
Saint Leo (6-4) placed four starters in double-figures in the scoring column led by the double-double performance by forward Jordan Prais who posted team-leading totals of 21 points and 12 rebounds in the victory.
Things started off smoothly for the Fish as junior Manny Lopez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) nailed an opening jumper one minute into the game followed up by a long three-pointer from senior Fitzroy Anthony (Boca Raton, Fla.) to push the early advantage to 5-0. The lead would be short-lived however as the Lions rallied and went ahead 9-7 on a jumper by Prais with just under 14 minutes to play.
The Lion’s lead would grow to as many as 16 points in the opening period of play and the halftime score landed the Fish with a 38-21 deficit.
The second-half once again proved to be a struggle for the Sailfish as the Lions continually pressured PBA in a full-court and sometimes half-court trap, which led to key turnovers and in turn accumulating points for the Lions.
PBA placed two players in double-figures on the night led by sophomore Jonathan Lawrence (Miami Gardens, Fla.) with 12 points and junior David Powell (Hollywood, Fla.) with 10 points off the Sailfish bench. Lopez added nine points and four rebounds for PBA as well.
Now 2-12 on the season and near the mid-point of the season, PBA will look to push things forward in their next contest which will be on Friday, January 4th when they square off against the University of West Georgia. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
