WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team shook off a recent rough stretch in a big way on Friday afternoon by logging an 8-0 win over visiting Chowan University to even their record at 7-7 on the season. Playing in considerably cooler temperatures at Magic Jack Field, the Sailfish scored four goals in each half on their way to a dominating 8-0 win.
Junior Kenny Hogg tallied three goals to push his season total to a team-high 14 scores while freshman AJ Black set a PBA men’s soccer single-game record with five assists in the win over the Hawks.
A NCAA Division II program from North Carolina, the Hawks (1-13) struggled with possession as PBA jumped out early as Hogg tallied what can be now considered the game-winner just 50 seconds into the match as Gabe Carneiro delivered a smooth long ball up the sideline where freshman Michael Emert then took over as he delivered a swift cross to the foot of Hogg who put in the game’s first goal.
Emert was on the other end of the scoring in the 15th minute when Black cashed in his first assist of the afternoon as Emert made a quick move on his defender for an easy one-on-one with the CU goalkeeper.
Sophomore James Kaim was next in the scoring line for PBA in the 38th minute on an assist from Black followed by one final score before intermission by junior Charlie Hubbard on a Gustavo da Silva assist.
The second-half proved to be much like the first with PBA having many scoring opportunities and solidifying their advantage with four more goals.
Black teamed with Hogg first for a score in the 56th minute then found another Scotland native in Kevin Ireland for the next goal as Ireland put a beautiful goal into the upper 90 as PBA pushed to 6-0.
Sophomore Chris Karafilov saw a long bending corner kick in from Black in the 67th minute to give the Fish a 7-0 lead as Karafilov scored his first goal of the 2011 season.
Aaron Michael found Hogg for one final score in the 72nd as Michael’s back-pass was easy for Hogg to deposit in for his 14th score of the season.
Goalkeepers Jonathan Strunk and Steven Bush split the match in goal with Bush tallying the only save between the two.
The Fish outshot the Hawks by a 32-2 final tally while also producing 18 total corner kicks.
PBA will take on Clearwater Christian College on Monday, October 24th for their next outing as they will host the match at 11 am at Magic Jack Field.
