ORLANDO, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s cross country team traveled to the University of Central Florida on Friday with intentions of claiming another strong finish as they competed in the UCF Black and Gold Challenge. The Sailfish did just that by finishing as the top NCAA Division II team competing in the meet and a sixth place overall finish in the women’s 6,000 meter race.

The host institution in UCF claimed the team title after a rare tie with the University of Jacksonville with 88 points. The Scarlet Knights claimed the team title due to tie-breaker rules which was the scoring of their sixth runner. Jacksonville did not have a sixth runner compete.

Florida A&M University finished in third place (103 points) while Florida Gulf Coast University (110 points) and Embry-Riddle University (118 points) rounded out the top five.

Palm Beach Atlantic stood in sixth place with 131 points finishing ahead of NCAA Division I participants such as the University of North Florida (7th), Florida Atlantic University (8th) and Stetson University (14th). They also finished ahead of NCAA South Regional opponents including Rollins College (9th) and Nova Southeastern University (13th).

Jacksonville runner Joane Pierre was the top individual finisher with a 6K time of 21:47.

Sailfish freshman Kourtney Sumner was the top PBA finisher in 13th place with a final time of 23:37 while junior Faith Warren finished in 15th place just one second behind at 23:38.

All five of PBA’s scoring runners finished in the top-40 of the 128 participants as junior Katherine Harvey finished in 31st place with a solid time of 24:18 to follow up Sumner and Warren’s team-topping scores. Freshman Jessica Sexton was next in the PBA finishing order with a 24:29 time, good for 33rd place while Danielle Kittell followed with a time of 24:44 to finish in 39th place.

Sarah Walsh was the sixth member of PBA’s team competing and finished with a time of 27:01 to finish in 78th place for the meet.

The Sailfish will run again this coming weekend on Saturday, October 22nd when they compete in the Southeast Classic in Rome, Georgia.
