LAKELAND, Fla. - Looking to dust off some rust after a long lay-off for the Christmas holidays, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s basketball team stumbled out of the gates and couldn’t contain the high-octane offense of Florida Southern College in the opening game of the Holiday Inn/Ledger Classic.
After opening up a 58-37 lead after one-half of play, the Mocs put the Fish away with 57 more points in the second half to the tune of a 115-65 victory on their home floor for their holiday tournament.
FSC posted five players in double-figures on the night including a game-high 21 points from guard Rob Eldridge. A night of triumph for the Moccasins overall (8-4), the red and white set a new school record by connecting on 14-14 free-throws while finishing the contest with 14 successful three-pointers, tied for second in school history, while attempting 28 overall shots from beyond the arc.
Junior Manny Lopez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) paced the Sailfish attack with 15 points while senior Anthony Fitzroy (Boca Raton, Fla.) chipped in 13 points from the starting point-guard spot.
Sophomore and North Palm Beach native Anthony Gugino poured in 11 points on the night to go along with a team-high total of five rebounds in 32 minutes on the floor.
PBA returns to action tomorrow evening when they take on Montevallo University at the Florida Southern College tournament with a 6 pm start.
