Sailfish Cross Country Makes Their Long Anticipated 2011 Debut in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s cross country team ran their first race of the 2011 season on Saturday morning by participating at the University of Florida Mountain Dew Invitational. The ladies would finish 12th out of 19 participating teams including the third best team finish of non-NCAA Division I teams. Junior Faith Warren was the top individual finisher for the Sailfish with a time of 19:45 to finish 53rd in the field.

The University of Florida would claim the top three finishers as they also claimed the team title with Genevieve LaCaze performing with the top time in the women’s 5,000 meters with a time of 17:05.

The University of North Carolina would finish second while the University of South Florida, Jacksonville University and Florida Atlantic University would round out the top five. The only non-NCAA Division I programs to finish ahead of PBA were Embry Riddle (6th) and Nova Southeastern University (8th).

Following Warren’s performance for the Fish was freshman Kourtney Sumner who competed well in her first collegiate race as she finished 72nd with a time of 20:16. Just behind Sumner was another PBA freshman in Jessica Sexton who claimed 75th place with a time of 20:19.

Junior Katherine Harvey was next in line for PBA with a time of 20:29 to claim the 80th spot while Danielle Kittell finished 91st at 20:48.

Palm Beach Atlantic All-American Meghan Gilmore has been slowed by an ankle injury as she finished with a time of 21:18 to finish 107th in the field. Gilmore finished last season’s UF Mountain Dew Invitational with a 5th overall finish with a time of 17:42.

Sarah Walsh rounded out PBA’s participants with a time of 24:12 to finish the race in 166th place.

With a strong opening showing by the PBA women’s cross country team they will hope to take their momentum into next week’s race when they will participate in the Florida Runners Invitational in Titusville, Florida on Friday, September 30th at 4 pm.
