VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s and women’s tennis teams got their season started on Thursday afternoon at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) South Regional held at Valdosta State University with mixed results. The annual tournament paired PBA players, both in singles and in doubles, against some of the best competition in the NCAA Division II ranks.
The ladies put forth two doubles tandems for the tournament as Victoria Baca and Natalia Trotter took on the team of Ivan and Krause from Lynn University and were defeated 8-2. Freshman Veena Vasquez teamed up with Jessica Wharton to take on the #5-seed in the field of Tkach and Whitlock from Rollins College while falling by a similar 8-2 score.
In singles action it was Baca losing a heartbreak to Maria Beikirane of Saint Leo University by the tally of 4-6, 6-2, 8-10 in a grueling match. Trotter found a win in her first singles match of the fall by claiming a 6-1, 2-6, 10-7 win over Valdosta State’s own Natalia Cadenis.
Vasquez fell 1-6, 5-7 to Barry University player Lizbeth Vargas while Wharton was taken down by Florida Tech’s Kristina Huba in straight sets, 0-6, 0-6.
The team will continue their fall competition at the ITA Regional on Friday as they battle in more action in the Peach State.
