WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team has had a knack for excitement of late. After defeating Southeastern University on the road Thursday evening on a goal with only one second remaining in regulation, the Sailfish did it again on a warm Saturday afternoon at Magic Jack Field when freshman Moriah Zusi connected on a golden goal in the first overtime against Florida Memorial University to claim the 2-1 win.
Despite dominating the possession time in the match and outshooting their opponent by a final tally of 21-2, the Sailfish (5-3) struggled to finish in the box as the game had to be decided in overtime.
Freshman Marianne Harnes got the Fish on the board in the 24th minute when she dribbled in and then blasted a shot to the right-side and into the back of the net from well beyond the 18’.
It appeared throughout the first-half that PBA would add to their lead while FMU (0-3) was limited on their overall chances evidenced by only collecting two shots in the half.
That all changed however although not quickly. The Lions goalkeeper, Natalia Gomez, easily collected an easy save then made a strong throw up the right-side toward the feet of the FMU midfield. Another quick pass up field found the feet of Petrice Brooks who shook off one PBA defender and made a breakaway toward goal.
Brooks made one move to her right then easily tapped in the equalizer after PBA keeper Allison Fox had to come out to try and cutoff the charging player. The score would remain tied into the half and then again through the end of regulation.
PBA managed 12 shots in the first-half but could only produce three shots in the second-half. The defense remained steady however as they would not allow another shot after halftime.
The Fish offense kicked it into high-gear in the first overtime period as they peppered Gomez with six shots including Zusi’s game-winner.
After a Marianne Harnes shot was blocked, the loose ball came out to the chest of Zusi who then calmly stepped into her shot and put the game-winner into the back of the net for the 2-1 win.
Fox collected her fifth win in goal for PBA while making one save over 96 minutes of action.
The Fish have played a very busy schedule through the first few weeks of the season but will now have some time to rest up before taking on the University of Tampa on Friday, September 23rd at 7:30 pm in Tampa, Florida for their next match.
