AMERICUS, Ga.- For the second time already this season the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team crossed the Florida state border into neighboring Georgia to play an important regional opponent. After failing to claim a victory the first go round against Clayton State University last week, the Sailfish earned a hard-fought 1-0 win on Monday afternoon over Georgia Southwestern University as sophomore Andrea Jefferson collected the only goal of the match early in the second-half.
After a scoreless first-half produced only six combined shots between the two teams, the Sailfish (3-3) finally broke through in the 50th minute when Jefferson gathered a deflected shot inside the box and put the rebound home for a 1-0 lead. The advantage would hold up down the stretch as the young Sailfish defense held off any attempts at an equalizer from the GSW (1-3) attackers.
Palm Beach Atlantic finished with a lead in the shots category by a 7-4 count while dominating corner kick opportunities with a 7-0 advantage.
“We are happy with the win especially after such a long weekend of games and delays,” stated head coach James Krgyer.
“We stayed composed and in the first-half played some of our best soccer. With our legs getting the better of us we slowed down in the second-half and missed opportunities to go ahead. A goal disallowed in the first-half and many good options saw us at zeros but responding and holding showed some great potential from our young squad. Looking ahead to a day off and to re-focus for our next match,” concluded the Sailfish head coach.
Sophomore goalkeeper Allison Fox posted her second shutout in a row as she played the full 90 minutes in goal for PBA. Georgia Southwestern saw two goalkeepers split time as Jordyn Birchett played the first first-half then gave way to Amber Bahri who allowed the only goal.
After a busy stretch that saw the team play three matches in four days in three different locations, the Fish will have a few days to prepare for their next match which will take place at Southeastern University on Thursday, September 15th at 7 pm in Lakeland, Florida.
