LAKELAND, Fla.- Despite a late start time that pushed the Palm Beach Atlantic University and Florida Southern College women’s soccer match to nearly 9:30 pm on Friday evening the two teams would compete on a rain-soaked Barnett Field. The Moccasins would go on to tally their first win of the season by scoring three goals in the opening half and holding on for a 3-1 win.
The loss drops PBA to 1-3 on the season while FSC improves to 1-2 with the victory.
Junior Meagan Phillips would tally the lone PBA goal as she was fed by freshman Bailey Sprague early in the second-half to give the Blue and White some momentum. Unfortunately for the Fish and their fans that would be all the scoring that would take place for either team the rest of the way as the Mocs defense held strong enough the remainder of the way for the 3-1 win.
Lexie Bottomley got FSC on the board with a goal four minutes into the game then with the Mocs continuing to press forward they saw their lead extended with a Kara Moore goal in the 18th minute.
Emily Griffith headed home an insurance goal in the 30th minute to put her team on top 3-0. That’s where things would remain the rest of the way as FSC finished with a shots advantage of 15-1 in the first-half and 22-7 for the match.
“As a young team we have many lessons to learn and one of them showed tonight and that is the ability to deal with adversity,” said head coach James Kryger.
“ We came into a tough game and had trouble settling down and could not compose ourselves until half after the long delay. A good second-half saw good chances and an organized team effort. Close opportunities to breakdown the lead but a little too late. With game just hours away we need to regroup and pull out a win,” concluded Coach Kryger.
The Fish have little time to waste in getting ready for their next opponent as they will host Johnson and Wales University for the team’s home opener on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm. The match will be played at Magic Jack Field.
