BOCA RATON, Fla.- Within the first 20 minutes of their match on Friday afternoon the Anderson University men’s soccer team had propelled themselves to a 3-0 lead as they would then dig in and hold off the Palm Beach Atlantic side as they took the opening game of the Wyndham Garden Inn Classic held at Lynn University. The Trojans earned the 4-1 victory as PBA drops to 2-1 on the season.
Kenny Hogg was the lone Sailfish player to register a goal for PBA after they had fallen behind 3-0 with the barrage of early goals supplied by the AU offense.
The Trojans (2-1) tallied their first goal at the 1:35 point as Mark Smith delivered a long free kick into the box where Lasse Sohrweide headed the pass in for an early 1-0 lead.
Perhaps stunned from such a quick strike score, the Sailfish would regroup over the next several minutes before two more goals in the first-half, nearly five minutes of game time apart in between them. Clement Sampson scored first at the 15 minute mark while Sohrweide produced a third score in the 20th minute on a long free kick of his own.
Things would remain 3-0 entering halftime as AU outshot PBA by a 10-3 tally.
Hogg would give the Fish some hope early in the second-half as he drilled a penalty kick home to bring the score at 3-1.
Despite an increase in shots on goal as PBA led the count 8-5 in the second-half it would be Anderson who would remain on top.
Tapiwa Munetsi added an insurance goal for AU with the team’s fourth score just shy of the 71st minute.
Things won’t get easier for PBA on day two of the tournament as they will be matched up against #5-ranked Clayton State University (Ga.) at 2 pm on Saturday on the campus of Lynn University.
