ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- It took nearly 100 minutes of soccer action on Thursday night to decide a season-opening victor at the Flagler College Kickoff Classic as the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team battled Limestone College to a scoreless contest through regulation. With the Sailfish down a player shortly before overtime, LC would take advantage as they finally broke through with a goal in the 98th minute to secure the win.
Starting a lineup that consisted of six freshmen players making their collegiate debut, the Fish shook off a sluggish start offensively to gain some more consistent rhythm down the stretch.
Finishing the game with a golden goal would be Vanessa Jarrett who received a through ball from teammate Gabriella Reid as Jarrett went to the far post for the game’s only score at the 98:13 mark of the first overtime.
Both goalkeepers kept the score knotted at 0-0 as PBA’s Allison Fox and LC’s Kris Alderin-Fleagle each made numerous saves to preserve the shutout. Fox finished as the tough-luck loser in this one despite collecting eight saves.
Limestone outshot Palm Beach Atlantic 16-7 overall with a 5-5 tie in corner kick opportunities.
Both teams would collect a pair of cautions in the contest with freshman VJ Johnson being a issued a red card in the 84th minute following her second yellow card.
After Friday to recuperate, the Sailfish will take on Catawba College on Saturday, September 3rd as the second match of the Flagler Kickoff Classic to take place at 3 pm.
