WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Coming off one of the best seasons in school history by tallying 14 wins and a runner-up finish at the NCCAA National Championships, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team is gearing up for what they hope to be another successful campaign in 2011 under fourth-year head coach James Kryger.
The Sailfish finished the 2010 season with a 14-5-2 record including a six game winning streak through the final few games of the regular season and into NCCAA postseason play. After capturing another NCCAA Regional Championship, the Sailfish became the first NCCAA South Region institution to make it to the Championship match as they would eventually lose in penalty kicks to Spring Arbor University.
Before entering their exciting postseason run the Fish captured NCAA regional victories over the likes of Ouachita Baptist University, Eckerd College, USC-Aiken, North Greenville University, and Flagler College. This season’s slate will once again push the team to new heights as Kryger has put together a very competitive NCAA Division II schedule.
The team will open up play at a early-season tournament hosted by Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida as they will battle opponents in the form of Limestone College and Catawba College over the Labor Day weekend on September 1st and September 3rd.
A busy stretch of early-season soccer will continue later that week as the team will take on Clayton State University, a member of the Peachbelt Conference on September 5th in Morrow, Georgia followed by a road matchup on September 9th against the always-tough Moccasins of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida.
The Sailfish will make their home debut one day later as they will suit up against Johnson and Wales University for the team’s home opener at 5 pm on September 10th in West Palm Beach.
Back to the road go the Fish for mid-September matchups with Georgia Southwestern University (Sept. 12) in Americus, Georgia and a showdown with Southeastern University (Sept. 15) in Lakeland. A home date with Florida Memorial University on September 17th will close out a busy stretch for the team as they will battle the Lions to conclude an eight match stretch over the course of 17 days.
Another tough NCAA Division II foe in Texas A & M International University visits Palm Beach County for a home date on September 26th followed by a visit to Lynn University in nearby Boca Raton, Florida later in the week on September 29th.
After over a week of rest Palm Beach Atlantic will host back-to-back matches against the likes of South Florida rivals Nova Southeastern University (Oct. 7) and Barry University (Oct. 11) before hitting the road to Georgia once again to battle Valdosta State University on October 15th.
The final stretch of the home season witnesses the Sailfish take on Flagler College on October 19th and Chowan University on October 22nd. A late season road trip to the University of West Alabama (Oct. 29) and the University of West Florida (Oct. 31) round out a very competitive regular season slate for the Sailfish.
Stay tuned for more information regarding the 2011 season for the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer program as preseason begins in the middle of August.
