WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball program has announced five more student-athletes who have signed National Letters of Intent (NLI) to attend PBA beginning in the fall. Christian Correa, Cody Higgins, Nic Kovacs, Andres Lopez, and Matthew Perkowski will join Matt Wisniewski who was an early-signing from this past fall on campus for their first season with the Sailfish in 2012.
Head coach Gary Carter and his staff are hopeful that the collection of talented high school and junior college players they have assembled will add to an already deep and talented roster from a season ago that saw the Fish earn 27 wins in Carter’s second season at the helm.
“We feel like we have the right type of players coming into our team that will help us make that next move forward with the baseball program,” said Carter.
“The team made solid strides from year one to year two and with the quality student-athletes we have returning and the additions of these young men we feel the future of our program is very bright,” said the Sailfish skipper and a member of Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame.
Correa will join Wisniewski as true freshmen for the Sailfish in 2012 while the remaining four members of this year’s recruiting class will be junior college transfers.
A solid all-around catching prospect from North Broward Prep, Correa is coming off a very fine senior season with the Eagles as he produced 11 homeruns and a .392 batting average for his high school team that reached the FHSAA Final Four for 3A. Correa will join the Fish after playing for head coach Brian Campbell and leading the team in runs batted in and homeruns.
Joining Correa from the South Florida region will be two players from South Florida Community College in Higgins and Lopez.
Higgins is a middle-infielder that is originally from Sebring, Florida and a product of Sebring High School before moving on to a two-year career at SFCC. The Male Scholar Athlete of the Year while enrolled at SFCC, Higgins was a two-time All-State Academic selection as well as a .300 hitter that will provide depth for the Sailfish infield as a junior in 2012.
Adding to the depth of the PBA pitching staff will be right-hander Andres Lopez who proved to be an innings-eater and strong 6’1” hurler for SFCC. Originally from Homestead, Florida, Lopez played his high school baseball at Coral Reef Senior High before moving on to the junior college ranks at South Florida CC.
Lopez led the SFCC pitching staff in innings pitched and strikeouts and is expected to contribute next season wearing a Sailfish uniform as a valued addition to the staff.
Also adding to the PBA pitching depth will be Nic Kovacs who hails from Clermont, Florida and will be transferring to PBA from Lake-Sumter Community College after performing for East Ridge High School.
Another top junior college performer for his team, Kovacs finished with an 8-2 record at LSCC while tying the school-record for most wins in a season. This type of performance led Kovacs to earning All-State 2nd-Team honors and an All-Conference 1st-Team nod as well.
Rounding out the list of new signees is Matt Perkowski who will transfer to Palm Beach Atlantic after competing for Polk State College. A Suncoast Conference 2nd-Team selection and a member of the Dean’s List, Perkowski is expected to add depth at the corner infield spots as well as in the outfield.
A 6’1” player who calls North Fort Myers, Florida home, Perkowski completed his Associate’s Degree this past spring at PSC before deciding on making the transition to PBA for the next two seasons. While at Polk State, Perkowski showed off his extra-base hitting abilities as he produced 12 doubles, five triples, and four homeruns while being an effective base-stealer and run-producer.
These new additions to the Sailfish baseball team will be looked upon to fill holes and add depth for the roster as the team begins preparations for the 2012 season.
