JUPITER, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball season ended on Wednesday afternoon at the Roger Dean Complex as the team was defeated 9-5 by Truett-McConnell College on another very warm day at the ballpark. The loss drops the Sailfish to 27-26 for the 2011 season as they will now take the summer off and begin before returning in the fall for the 2012 season.
The Sailfish would fall down early to the Bears in what would be an elimination game for both teams as both squads entered with a 1-1 record in tournament play.
The Bears scored early off Sailfish starter Jeremiah Cothiere (4-3) who exited after only 1.1 innings of work while allowing six hits and five earned runs. The durable righty walked one and struck out two while also hitting a batter.
TMC tallied one run in the first inning on a run-scoring single from Brian York then saw Rosser Roberts lift a long homerun out to right-field for a 5-0 lead through their first two times at bat.
Left-handed reliever Kenny Frosch would enter and put out the fire as he went the next 3.1 innings while allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) while collecting a pair of strikeouts.
Senior Graham White made his final appearance of his solid career by tallying the final 2.1 innings and allowed only one run.
The Fish got to starting pitcher Matt Hill in the second inning for a RBI single by freshman Johnny Cole then saw two more runs come in the fourth inning on an RBI double from Matt Civetti and a run-scoring single from Ethan Perla.
Never to give up on a potential rally, the Fish would plate two final runs in the seventh inning, all with two outs, but would come up short in their quest to claim the NCCAA Regional Championship.
North Greenville and Truett-McConnell rounded out play in the loser’s bracket final following the game versus PBA with NGU outlasting TMC 4-3 in ten innings in a classic contest. North Greenville will now battle Southeastern on Thursday beginning at 12 pm and be forced to defeat the Fire twice to claim the regional title.
Nick Natale finished 2-for-3 for PBA in leading their eight hit attack.
