STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS- Led by Manny Lopez and two other double-digit scorers on Saturday evening, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s basketball team came out on top by a score of 72-68 against Texas A&M-Commerce during day two of the Tarleton Classic.
A junior and native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Lopez produced a game-high 23 points on 10-14 shooting to lead the Sailfish to their first victory of the season and first career collegiate win for new PBA head coach Terry Primm.
Lopez connected on 17 of his points in the second half of play as the Fish overcame a 28-32 deficit at intermission. A big part of that success was the steady outside shooting of the young Sailfish program who hit 8-18 attempts from long-range compared to that of a 3-18 three-point shooting performance by the Lions.
Joining Lopez in double-figures on the night were junior David Powell (Hollywood, Fla.) with 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds and a game-high six assists and senior point guard Fitzroy Anthony (Boca Raton, Fla.) who chipped in 15 points and five assists in 38 minutes on the floor.
Scooby Johnson paced the Lions attack with 19 points on 8-12 from the floor and 13 rebounds.
Despite being outshot from the floor, with A&M Commerce registering a shooting percentage of 45.8% compared to that of 41.9% for PBA, the Sailfish did win the turnover battle as the blue and white committed only nine turnovers while the Lions totaled 17. The Lions out-rebounded PBA 46-30.
Now 1-1 on the season after dropping their opener in the Tarleton Classic to the host Tarleton State University on Friday (77-72), PBA returns home to West Palm Beach to take on nationally-ranked Rollins College on Monday, November 19th at 7:00 p.m.
