PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University softball team had all team phases clicking on Wednesday evening as they hosted Eckerd College for a pair of NCAA South Region contests. The PBA bats were alive from the start as they pounded out 13 hits and 12 runs in game one for a 12-0 route while continuing their good work at the plate in game two for a 7-2 showing.
Now 5-0 against the Tritons (11-26) this season, the Sailfish wasted little time in either game of backing their starting pitching as both Chris Donovan (11-5) and Lauren Bubeck (7-5) both had plenty of runs to work with.
The Fish (19-13) struck for two runs in the first inning of game one followed by five more runs in the third inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The squad put five more runs on the board in the fourth inning to cap a 12-0 win in a five-inning mercy rule game.
Senior Caitlin Bouschet connected for a RBI single in the second inning while Brittany Jones added a sacrifice fly for the other run.
In the big third and fourth frames, the Sailfish received big hits from Mari Stokes (RBI triple), Jones (RBI double), Brittany Schneider (two-run single), and Camille Benito (three-run double). Jones also added in another RBI single in the fourth inning while the Sailfish also saw Kimberly Traxler add in a run-scoring single.
Donovan was once again superb in the pitching circle as she allowed only one hit, one walk, and struck out four batters in five innings.
Mackenzie Johnson finished 2-for-3 in the game with three runs scored while Stokes and Jones each had two hits with Jones driving in three runs. Every PBA player to register an at-bat recorded at least one hit.
Game two saw Bubeck follow Donovan’s performance with a solid effort of her own as she limited the Tritons offense to only six hits in seven inning while the Tequesta native struck out four batters and allowed only one earned run.
The Sailfish jumped on the Tritons early again with an RBI single in the second inning from Stokes that plated Bouschet who led off the inning with a triple.
PBA piled on three more runs in the second inning as Bubeck helped her own cause with a two-run single while Stokes chipped in a sacrifice fly RBI.
After the Tritons cut the PBA lead in half at 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning, the Blue and White got back to work with three runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to another Bouschet triple, another RBI double from Stokes, and Stokes then coming in to score on an Eckerd error.
Bouschet finished 4-for-4 in the game as she smashed a single, double, and two triples while scoring three times and driving in one run. Stokes finished 2-for-3 with three runs driven home and one run scored. Both Bouschet and Stokes made a number of highlight-reel worthy defensive plays throughout the evening.
Traxler continued her good work from the first game with a 2-for-3 game while Bubeck finished 2-for-3 as well.
Palm Beach Atlantic will have the weekend off from game action and will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 5th as they will host Florida Tech for a double-header at the Lake Catherine Complex beginning at 5 pm.
