LAKE WORTH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball team played host to Eckerd College on Friday night at Dave Manzo Field as they hoped to begin their weekend in fine form against the visiting Tritons who also take on PBA for a pair of games on Saturday. Try as they might however, the Fish would once again struggle defensively as they committed seven errors for the second straight game and were defeated 6-3.
Joey Cuda (3-0) pitched very effectively for Eckerd (8-4) on the night as the 5’10” junior mixed in his breaking pitches for strikes while keeping the Sailfish hitters honest by spotting his fastball to both sides of the plate. Cuda finished with an outing of eight innings pitched while allowing seven hits two runs (one earned), three walks, and 13 strikeouts.
Joe McLemore came on for the ninth inning save and despite allowing one run held on for the 6-3 win.
Logan Thomas (1-1) was handed his first defeat of the season as he allowed all six runs on the night in 5.2 innings pitched however only two runs were earned. The Melbourne, Florida product saw three runs come in to score in the first and two more runs plated in the second inning for Eckerd thanks in large part to four PBA errors.
Christian Wonders once again gave the Sailfish a solid bullpen stint with 3.1 innings of scoreless work as he did not allow a hit and struck out three batters.
Down 5-0 after the second-inning, the Fish (10-6) attempted to chip away at the EC lead and did so with a run in the fifth and sixth inning to see the advantage come down to 6-2, however Cuda and the EC defense would escape each time without more runs coming in.
Johnny Cole delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to get the Fish on the board while Travis Murray advanced to third-base in the sixth inning on a wild-pitch then came in to score on an over-throw by the EC catcher.
Palm Beach Atlantic would put runners on the corners with only one out in the seventh inning as they appeared to have Cuda on the ropes however a strikeout and a tapper back to the mound quickly ended the threat. Cuda struck out the side in the eighth inning to close out his night in strong form.
Stephen Pelc was the only hitter for EC to register a mult-hit game as the second-baseman finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Bryant Gibson scored two runs with one hit.
Cole finished 2-for-5 for the Sailfish while an RBI while Jorge Chavarria was 2-for-4 including a double.
The Fish and Tritons will be back in action on Saturday, March 5th as they will suit up at 1 pm four a double-header. Both games will be broadcasted on the Sailfish Sports Network.
